The Vril Society

There is no official or authentic proof that the Vril Society ever existed.

They were said to have been formed and ruled by female psychic mediums who claimed to have contact with Aryan aliens living in Alpha Cen Tauri. They also grew out their hair and sought to teach others how to waken the forces of Vril. Maybe only slightly surprisingly, they also allegedly included the infamous Adolf Hitler and other major Nazi Party members.

Their name originated from the ancient Sumerian word "Vri-il" meaning "like God."Through the power of intense concentration and visualization, this secret society believed that they would change their race to become equal to those that lived within the depths of the Earth. They believed a true master of these techniques could have power over their self, those around them, and the world.

Years before the Nazi's took power in Germany, Vril: The Power of the Coming Race was published in 1870. Its creator, Edward Bulwer-Lytton, dabbled in politics as well as many forms of literature. An author of many novels dealing with the occult and secret societies, it was believed by some that his novels were were facts hidden within fiction. He is also known for the famous saying "the pen is mightier than the sword," something this novel in particular seems to prove with its power over some fanatic readers.

Vril: The Power of the Coming Race is not only important for its influence on societies such as the Vril Society but also as an early example of Science Fiction. Sometimes it is even regarded as the first novel of this genre. The idea that a subterranean angelic master race made up of energy called Vril existed and its claims that this race would one day rise to conquer the earth were strongly believed by some pretty wealthy readers and, as quickly as they accepted it as truth, they created societies based upon these "facts."

The main plot of the novel is relatively simple. In it, a miner accidentally discovers the underground world of the Vril-ya. There, he finds that the inhabitants are the decedents of those who lived in Atlantis and that they have access to an energy called Vril that also is used as a way of control by those few who have mastered it. It can destroy, heal, bring life, or even control all matter, animate or inanimate, on earth and all with the power of one's mind. The hero is viewed as a pet, escapes, and comes back to the surface to tell the tale of "the coming race," which is where the title comes from.

As Christopher Hodakapp and Alice Von Kannon say above in their article "Alien Secrets: The Vril Society," Vril: The Power of the Coming Race became entangled in many delusions and beliefs built upon nothing but suspicion. When it was published, readers believed in the possibility of an underground alien race and those who believed in Atlantis jumped on this novel for its claim to descendants of that long lost city.

Nowadays, they are tied to a society that may or may not have existed, the Nazis, and aliens. Some believe that Vril technology used by the Nazis allowed them to land on the moon and build an underground base that still exists.

No matter how much doubt or intrigue surrounds the Vril, it still remains an interesting story surrounded with mystery 142 years later.
